Political turmoil has intensified following the Income Tax Department’s raid on the premises of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)’s lone MLA, Umashankar Singh. Party supremo Mayawati has reacted sharply to the action, calling it unfortunate.
Mayawati expresses displeasure
Mayawati defended Umashankar Singh in a post on the social media platform ‘X’. She stated that the MLA has performed his duties with complete honesty and integrity since joining the party. According to her, no complaint of illegal property acquisition or any wrongdoing has been received from his constituency so far.
She also noted that Umashankar Singh has been suffering from a serious illness for the past two years. She termed the action taken at this time as inhumane. Mayawati stated that even if the Income Tax Department had received a complaint, the MLA could have been questioned later, considering his health. However, she clarified that the party was not interfering in departmental work.
Action in three districts, including Lucknow
According to reports, the Income Tax Department conducted simultaneous raids on Umashankar Singh’s residence and offices in three districts, including Lucknow, on Wednesday. The raids continued for several hours.
Sources claim that this action was taken based on complaints regarding alleged irregularities in documents and financial transactions related to the MLA’s former firm, “Chhatra Shakti Infra Construction.” An official statement from the department is currently awaited.
