No Extension Request from Ajit Agarkar, BCCI Dismisses Speculation

Ajit Agarkar: Recent reports suggesting that India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar had approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with a request to extend his tenure have been firmly denied. The cricket board has rejected these claims, putting an end to the speculation that had been circulating over the past few days.

Current Contract and Rules

As per existing regulations, a chief selector can serve a maximum term of four years. Agarkar, who took over the role in 2023, has completed three years so far. His current contract is set to run until September this year.

Future Decision to Be Taken Later

According to a report by PTI, a BCCI source confirmed that discussions regarding a possible extension will only take place after his current term concludes. The decision on whether Agarkar continues in the role until the 2027 ODI World Cup will be made jointly between him and the BCCI secretary at the appropriate time.

Successful Tenure So Far

Under Agarkar’s leadership as chief selector, Team India has enjoyed remarkable success. The team secured titles in the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy, and the 2026 T20 World Cup, marking a highly successful phase for Indian cricket.

Selection Committee and Future Planning

The current selection panel, led by Agarkar, includes Shiv Sundar Das, RP Singh, Ajay Ratra, and Pragyan Ojha. With the 2027 ODI World Cup still about a year away, the selectors are believed to have already shortlisted around 20 players, keeping a close watch on their performance as preparations continue.
