IPL 2026 : Shreyas Iyer found himself in trouble once again, even though Punjab Kings secured a solid win against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Punjab chased down a challenging target of 210 runs in just 18.4 overs, winning the match by five wickets. However, the victory was overshadowed by disciplinary action taken against the captain and his team.

Second Consecutive Slow Over-Rate Offence

This was the second time in the season that Iyer was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate. Earlier, he had already been fined ₹12 lakh during a match against the Gujarat Titans.

With this being a repeat offence, the penalty became stricter.

IPL Statement and Penalty Details

According to the official statement released by the IPL authorities, the offence falls under Article 2.22 of the league’s Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate requirements.

As a result:

  • Shreyas Iyer was fined ₹24 lakh

All playing XI members, including the Impact Player, were fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fees (whichever is lower)

Iyer Leads From the Front with the Bat

Despite the controversy, Iyer delivered a strong performance with the bat. He scored a quick half-century off just 29 balls, playing a key role in the successful run chase.

  • Prabhsimran Singh – 43 runs off 34 balls
  • Priyansh Arya – 39 runs off 11 balls
  • Cooper Connolly – 36 runs off 22 balls

CSK Put Up a Big Total

Earlier in the match, Chennai Super Kings posted a strong total of 209/5 in 20 overs.

Top scorers included:

  • Ayush Mhatre – 73 runs off 43 balls
  • Shivam Dube – 45 runs off 27 balls
  • Ruturaj Gaikwad – 28 runs off 22 balls
  • Sarfaraz Khan – 32 runs off 12 balls

However, their efforts were not enough to stop Punjab’s strong chase.

Back-to-Back Losses for Chennai

This defeat marked the second consecutive loss for Chennai Super Kings in the tournament. Their previous defeat came against the Rajasthan Royals.
