New Delhi : While many parts of the world remain tense due to ongoing conflicts and military tensions, India has taken a humanitarian step to support people facing a food crisis. The Indian government has dispatched 1,000 metric tons of rice to the African nation of Malawi, which is currently struggling with a severe drought.
The relief shipment was sent from Nhava Sheva Port in Mumbai as part of India’s effort to help countries in need. The assistance aims to strengthen food security for communities affected by the ongoing dry conditions.
Support for People Affected by El Niño Drought
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the food aid has been sent to help people in Malawi who are dealing with the impact of a prolonged drought caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon.
In a social media statement, he said the assistance reflects India’s commitment to cooperation and partnership with countries of the Global South, particularly during times of crisis.
Where Is Malawi Located?
Malawi is a small landlocked country in southern Africa. It shares its borders with Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique. The country is widely known for Lake Malawi, one of the largest freshwater lakes on the African continent.
Agriculture forms the backbone of Malawi’s economy, and a large portion of its population depends on farming for their livelihood. However, changing weather patterns and repeated dry spells have significantly affected agricultural production in recent years.

Severe Drought Worsens Food Crisis
Malawi is currently experiencing one of its toughest drought periods in recent times. Experts say the situation has largely been driven by the El Niño climate pattern, which disrupts normal rainfall across several African regions.
Between 2025 and 2026, many areas in Malawi recorded extremely low rainfall. In several districts, rain did not fall for seven to ten consecutive days, damaging crops and leaving farmland dry. As conditions worsened, the government was forced to declare a disaster in several parts of the country.
Reports indicate that crop production has dropped sharply, pushing millions of people toward food shortages. In addition to crop losses, livestock has also been affected, and many communities are facing growing difficulties in accessing drinking water.
A Message of Global Solidarity
India’s decision to send food aid highlights its broader approach of supporting developing nations during humanitarian emergencies. The shipment to Malawi is intended not only to provide immediate relief but also to reinforce international cooperation among countries facing climate-related challenges.
