Sri Lanka : A resolution passed in the Sri Lankan Parliament has been widely discussed, while media outlets in India have remained silent on the matter. In fact, the pensions of MPs in Sri Lanka have been discontinued. The abolition of MPs’ pensions has been presented as a moral responsibility.
Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara told MPs that given the level of debate and performance within Parliament, voters do not believe MPs should receive pensions. Under the previous system in Sri Lanka, Members of Parliament were entitled to a pension after serving only five years in office.
The government voted 154 in favor of repealing the pension law, with two votes against. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa argued against the proposal, arguing that pensions are necessary to ensure social security for legislators after leaving office.
This decision by the Sri Lankan government fulfills a key promise made by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who came to power following Sri Lanka’s 2022 economic crisis.
