Trump Announces 3-Day Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire, Prisoner Exchange Also Agreed

Washington: In a significant development in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, both nations have agreed to observe a temporary three-day ceasefire from Saturday, May 9, through Monday, May 11. The announcement was made on Friday by Donald Trump, who said the pause in hostilities will also include a major prisoner exchange between the two sides.

According to Trump, Russia and Ukraine have agreed to suspend military operations for a limited period while efforts continue toward a broader diplomatic solution.

1,000 Prisoners to Be Exchanged by Both Sides

Trump stated that as part of the ceasefire arrangement, both countries will carry out a large-scale prisoner swap involving 1,000 detainees. The exchange is being seen as one of the biggest humanitarian steps taken since the conflict began.

He shared the update through Truth Social, where he described the agreement as an important step toward reducing tensions between the two nations.

Trump Says He Personally Requested the Ceasefire

In his post, Trump revealed that he had personally requested both leaders to consider a temporary halt in fighting. He also expressed appreciation to Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy for agreeing to the proposal.

Trump said the ceasefire comes at a symbolic moment, as Russia marks Victory Day, a national celebration honoring victory in the Second World War.

Hope for a Larger Peace Process

Trump described the three-day truce as a possible first step toward ending one of the deadliest conflicts in recent history. He said discussions aimed at reaching a long-term resolution are continuing and expressed confidence that progress is being made.

He added that the world is moving closer each day to finding a solution to what he called the most serious military conflict since World War II.
