Nepal: Nepal is witnessing a surge of public protests as dissatisfaction with recent government decisions continues to grow. From the busy streets of Kathmandu to the administrative hub of Singha Durbar, voices of dissent are getting louder. What began as scattered demonstrations has now turned into a widespread movement involving multiple sections of society.
Students Take Center Stage
one of the most striking aspects of the protests is the large participation of school students. Thousands have taken to the streets in their uniforms, holding placards and chanting slogans against the government. Student groups accuse the administration, led by Balen Shah, of ignoring dialogue and suppressing student unions.
Many students say their concerns about education policies are being sidelined, which has only intensified frustration among the youth.
Border Policy Sparks Economic Concerns
Another major trigger behind the protests is a new rule imposing mandatory customs duty on goods worth more than 100 rupees brought in from India. Residents of border regions argue that the decision places an unnecessary financial burden on ordinary people who rely on cross-border trade for daily needs.
Protesters believe the policy reflects a lack of understanding of ground realities and could disrupt local economies.
Corruption Allegations Fuel Political Pressure
The protests have also been fueled by serious allegations against Home Minister Sudan Gurung. Opposition parties and civil groups are demanding his resignation over claims of illegal wealth and questionable financial dealings.
Reports in Nepalese media suggest Gurung may have been involved in suspicious stock market transactions through intermediaries and had financial links with individuals accused in money laundering cases. There are also allegations that funds from his INGO “Hami Nepali” were transferred into personal accounts, further intensifying public outrage.
From Political Protest to Social Movement
What started as political opposition is now evolving into a broader social movement. Citizens, activists, and especially young people are increasingly vocal, expressing concern that current policies could harm Nepal’s future.
With protests gaining momentum and demands growing stronger, pressure is mounting on the government to respond through dialogue rather than enforcement.
