Islamabad, Pakistan: The passing of legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle on Sunday left music lovers across the globe in deep sorrow. Tributes poured in not only from India but also from Pakistan, where several artists and fans remembered her iconic contribution to music. Pakistani media outlets also covered her demise extensively.

However, what began as a tribute soon turned into a controversy.

Why PEMRA Took Action

Pakistan’s media regulatory body, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, has issued a show-cause notice to Geo News. The authority questioned the channel’s decision to air Indian songs and film visuals while reporting on Bhosle’s death.

According to PEMRA, broadcasting such content violates existing restrictions. Since 2018, Pakistani television channels have been barred from airing Indian content, following directives aligned with a Supreme Court ruling.

Alleged Violation of Supreme Court Orders

In its notice, PEMRA stated that Geo News had “deliberately disregarded” the Supreme Court’s decision banning Indian media content. The regulator also cited multiple violations of its rules and regulations.

The notice further warned that such actions could attract strict penalties under the PEMRA Ordinance 2002, amended in 2023. Possible consequences include fines, suspension, or even cancellation of the channel’s license.

Deadline for Response

PEMRA has directed the CEO of Independent Media Corporation, which owns Geo News, to appear before the authority by April 27. The channel has also been asked to submit a written explanation within 14 days, clarifying why action should not be taken against it.

Geo News Responds

Geo News Managing Director Azhar Abbas has defended the editorial decision. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he justified the coverage, stating that the intent was to honor a legendary singer whose influence extended across the subcontinent.

A Larger Debate

The incident has reignited discussions in Pakistan about cultural boundaries, media freedom, and whether tributes to globally celebrated artists should transcend political restrictions.
