Dhaka / Islamabad: Pakistan’s Interior Minister and Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, is currently on an official visit to Bangladesh, where a series of high-level meetings with Bangladeshi ministers and senior officials has led to a new agreement aimed at strengthening security cooperation between the two countries.
Focus on Security and Anti-Drug Cooperation
According to information released by Pakistan’s Interior Ministry, Naqvi met his Bangladeshi counterpart Salahuddin Ahmed in Dhaka on Friday. During the meeting, both sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in tackling drug trafficking, illegal narcotics trade, and substance abuse.
Under the agreement, Pakistan and Bangladesh will work together to identify and dismantle drug trafficking networks. The deal also includes intelligence sharing, exchange of modern technologies, and specialized training for security personnel.
Joint Working Group to Be Formed
Officials from both countries have agreed to establish a secretary-level joint working group to ensure the implementation of security initiatives and expand future cooperation.
The discussions also covered broader bilateral relations, internal security coordination, and training support for civil armed forces.
Cyber Crime and Financial Fraud Also on Agenda
Pakistan’s Interior Ministry stated that both sides discussed increasing cooperation in areas such as cybercrime investigations, financial fraud prevention, and training programs for officers at police academies.
The meetings highlighted growing efforts by both countries to strengthen institutional coordination in emerging security challenges.
Pakistan Presents ‘Safe City’ Proposal in Dhaka
One of the major highlights of the visit was Pakistan’s proposal to introduce a “Safe City” project in Bangladesh’s capital.
During the discussions, Mohsin Naqvi presented the project to Bangladeshi officials and assured full support from Pakistan in every aspect of its implementation.
If approved, the project would involve the installation of CCTV surveillance systems across Dhaka, with Pakistani technical teams expected to assist in deployment and operational training.
Strategic Presence in Bangladesh
The latest developments are being seen as part of Pakistan’s efforts to expand its strategic and security presence in Bangladesh, especially after recent political changes in the country.
The proposed Safe City model is similar to surveillance infrastructure already seen in Pakistan, where large-scale CCTV networks were developed with Chinese support in cities including Islamabad.
