India Appoints Lt Gen N.S. Raja Subramani (Retd) as Next Chief of Defence Staff

New Delhi: In a major leadership transition in India’s military establishment, the Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani (Retired) as the country’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He will officially take over the position after General Anil Chauhan completes his tenure on May 30.

Known for his deep understanding of strategic and defense matters, particularly those involving Pakistan and China, Lt Gen Subramani is expected to play a crucial role in shaping India’s future military planning.

Early Military Journey

Lt Gen Raja Subramani comes from a family with a strong military background. He received his training from the National Defence Academy (NDA) and later from the Indian Military Academy (IMA).

He was commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles on December 14, 1985, marking the beginning of a military career that would span nearly four decades.

Nearly 40 Years of Service

During his long and distinguished career, Lt Gen Subramani served in several critical operational areas across the country.

He led counter-insurgency operations in Assam under Operation Rhino and later commanded the 168 Infantry Brigade in Jammu and Kashmir. He also served as commander of the 17 Mountain Division in the central sector.

His experience includes leading two army corps, including one of the Indian Army’s key strike corps on the western front. He has also served in areas linked to the China border, giving him extensive operational knowledge of both India’s western and northern borders.

Key Leadership Roles

Lt Gen Subramani served as the Vice Chief of Army Staff from July 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025.Before that, he held the position of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command. At present, he is serving as Military Adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS).

Strong Academic and Strategic Background

Apart from his operational experience, Lt Gen Subramani has also built a strong academic foundation in defense and strategic studies.

He completed higher military education at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the United Kingdom and the National Defence College in New Delhi.

He also holds a Master’s degree from King’s College London and an MPhil in Defence Studies from Madras University.

Biggest Challenge as New CDS

As the new Chief of Defence Staff, one of his biggest responsibilities will be pushing forward India’s theatreisation model.

The objective of this reform is to improve coordination between the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy by creating integrated joint military commands for faster and more effective operational response.

Honours and Recognition

For his outstanding contribution to the armed forces, Lt Gen Raja Subramani has been awarded several prestigious military honours, including:

  • Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM)
  • Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM)
  • Sena Medal (SM)
  • Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM)

With decades of battlefield experience, strategic expertise, and leadership across key military formations, Lt Gen Raja Subramani now steps into one of India’s most important defense roles at a critical time.
