Brazzaville: Denis Sassou Nguesso has officially announced the formation of a new government following his recent election victory. The announcement was made through a televised address, confirming the continuation of Anatole Collinet Makosso as Prime Minister.
Government Structure and Key Appointments
The newly formed cabinet includes one Deputy Prime Minister, three Ministers of State, and 37 ministers. Among notable changes, Pierre Mabiala, previously in charge of land affairs and state property management, has been appointed Minister of State for Civil Service, Labour, and Social Dialogue.
Election Results and Constitutional Process
The presidential election, held on March 15, saw Nguesso secure a decisive victory with 94.9% of the vote. According to the constitution, the president is required to appoint a prime minister before forming a government, a process that has now been completed.
A total of 3,167,099 voters were registered, with a turnout of 84.65%. Seven candidates contested the election. Under Congo’s electoral system, the president is elected through direct voting, and a second round is held only if no candidate achieves a clear majority in the first round.
Resignation and Reappointment Timeline
Prior to the formation of the new government, Prime Minister Makosso and his cabinet had resigned on April 17. Shortly after, on April 23, President Nguesso reappointed him and tasked him with forming a new administration.
Opposition Boycott and Controversy
The election process was not without controversy. Two major political groups accused the authorities of unfair practices and chose to boycott the vote. Prominent opposition figures, including Jean-Marie Michel Mokoko and André Okombi Salissa, were among those who had previously faced imprisonment for up to 10 years.
Restrictions During Election Period
As in past elections, strict measures were imposed during the voting period. Internet services were suspended, and movement in the capital was heavily restricted, with traffic controls enforced across the city.
