Pakistan’s fate will be decided by the England-New Zealand clash in Colombo

ICC T20 World Cup 2026 : The ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has now reached a decisive stage. Four matches remain in the Super 8 stage, but two teams have already qualified for the final four. South Africa has advanced to the semi-finals from Group 1, while England has secured a spot in the other Super 8 group.

All eyes are now on the England vs. New Zealand match at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on February 27th. This match is crucial not only for the two teams but also for Pakistan’s hopes.

A ‘Do-or-Die’ Equation for Pakistan

The equation is clear—if New Zealand wins this match, Pakistan’s journey will end. New Zealand will have five points and advance to the semi-finals.

But if England wins, New Zealand will remain at three points, keeping Pakistan’s hopes alive. Consequently, Pakistan will have to defeat Sri Lanka by a significant margin in their final Super 8 match, as their net run rate is lower than New Zealand’s.-

The Net Run Rate Problem

Just winning won’t be enough, but the margin of victory will also matter.

  • Suppose England, batting first, scores 180 runs and wins the match by 30 runs.

In such a scenario, Pakistan would need to win against Sri Lanka by at least 40 runs.

This means that the winning margin in both matches would need to be around 70 runs for Pakistan to gain an edge in net run rate.

On the other hand, if New Zealand scores 150 runs while batting first, England would need to achieve this target in approximately 17 overs to make things easier for Pakistan. Pakistan would then have to chase the same target against Sri Lanka in approximately 14.4 overs.
