Dhaka, Bangladesh: Dhaka has formally requested New Delhi to bring visa services for Bangladeshi citizens back to normal levels. These services had been suspended during the tenure of Muhammad Yunus, when tensions between the two countries escalated. Although partial services have resumed, Bangladesh is now seeking a complete restoration.

Political Changes and Reciprocal Moves

In a notable development, Bangladesh reinstated all categories of visa services for Indian citizens in February 2026 after Tarique Rahman came to power. This move was seen as a step toward easing bilateral strain and encouraging smoother travel between the neighboring nations.

Official Statement in Parliament

According to a report by The Daily Star, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman addressed the issue in Parliament on Tuesday. Responding to a query raised by lawmaker Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Iqbal, he confirmed that Dhaka has asked India to normalize visa issuance for Bangladeshi nationals.

He expressed optimism, stating that positive developments could be expected soon regarding the matter.

Questions on Bilateral Relations

The discussion was tabled at the beginning of the parliamentary session by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed. Iqbal had questioned whether the government had taken concrete steps to improve ties with India and whether tourist and business visas for Bangladeshis had been halted. He also sought clarity on efforts to simplify travel procedures.

Emphasis on Strong Historical Ties

Rahman emphasized that Bangladesh and India share deep-rooted relations built on common values, historical connections, and strong people-to-people ties. He noted that the current government has been actively working to strengthen cooperation based on equality, mutual respect, and trust.

Recent Diplomatic Engagements

Highlighting ongoing diplomatic efforts, the Foreign Minister revealed that he recently visited India on a goodwill trip. During this visit, he held discussions with key Indian officials, including the External Affairs Minister, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister, and the National Security Advisor.
