Islamabad: Pakistan continues to assert victory in the 1971 war despite the country’s historical division, a claim often criticized in regional discourse. The latest remarks from Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir have once again sparked debate after he made controversial statements regarding India and recent military developments.
US Lobbying Records Reveal Extensive Contact Activity
According to documents filed under the United States Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), Pakistan engaged in extensive diplomatic and lobbying efforts in Washington between May 6 and May 9, 2025. These activities reportedly coincided with India’s “Operation Sindoor”.
The records indicate that Pakistan made more than 60 communications during this period involving US lawmakers, defense officials, treasury representatives, national security advisors, military personnel, and journalists.
Claims About Ceasefire and Mediation
During a ceremony held at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, Asim Munir stated that Pakistan’s strategy during the conflict was more effective than India’s. He also claimed that India had sought mediation through the United States, which Pakistan accepted in the interest of regional stability.
Munir further suggested that the ceasefire was achieved through American involvement, a statement made nearly a year after the reported military developments linked to Operation Sindoor.
Contradicting Evidence from Official Records
However, the FARA documents present a different picture. They suggest that following the Pahalgam terror incident, Pakistan anticipated a possible Indian response and actively initiated diplomatic outreach in Washington.
Reports indicate that Pakistan engaged multiple lobbying firms to establish contact with the US administration during this period.
Military-Level Communication Led to Ceasefire Agreement
Despite these diplomatic efforts, the ceasefire agreement was ultimately reached through direct communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan via established hotline channels.
According to sources, Pakistan’s DGMO contacted his Indian counterpart following escalating tensions, which eventually led to a mutual agreement to de-escalate.
It is also noted that India did not initiate any direct diplomatic outreach to Washington during this process.
