New Delhi: In a significant political development, the Rajya Sabha Secretariat has officially recognized several former members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), including Raghav Chadha, as part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A formal notification has been issued confirming their new political affiliation.
Secretariat Issues Official Notification
The notification released by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat states that all AAP MPs who recently joined the BJP will now be counted as BJP members in the Upper House. This move has altered the party composition, increasing the BJP’s strength in the Rajya Sabha to 113 members.
AAP’s Appeal Rejected
Prior to this development, AAP leader Sanjay Singh had written to Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan on April 26, 2026. In his letter, Singh urged the Chairman to disqualify the seven MPs who had left the party, citing defection concerns.
However, the latest notification indicates that this request has not been accepted. The Secretariat’s decision effectively legitimizes the shift of these MPs to the BJP.
AAP’s Strength Reduced in Upper House
Following the recognition of the rebel MPs as BJP members, the Aam Aadmi Party’s presence in the Rajya Sabha has been significantly reduced. The party now has only three members remaining in the Upper House.
