IPL 2026 : Lockie Ferguson will not be available for the initial phase of IPL 2026, dealing a temporary setback to Punjab Kings. The New Zealand fast bowler, who recently became a father, has chosen to stay back home to support his family during this important time.
Family Comes First for Ferguson
Speaking ahead of New Zealand’s third T20 against South Africa in Auckland, Ferguson shared that he wants to spend meaningful time with his wife and newborn son. During the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, he managed only a brief four-day break with his family, something he now wants to make up for.
He explained that with the increasing demands of international cricket, finding the right time to rest is never easy. However, he felt this was the right moment, especially since his wife had been managing things alone while he was away on national duty.
Return Planned for Later Stages
Ferguson is expected to rejoin Punjab Kings in the later stages of the tournament. He also aims to use this break to stay fresh and fully prepared for the second half of IPL 2026 and New Zealand’s upcoming winter tour.
Punjab Kings Have Backup Options Ready
To fill the gap, Punjab Kings are likely to turn to Ben Dwarshuis, the left-arm pacer from Australia, who was picked up for ₹4.4 crore in the auction. Dwarshuis brings extensive T20 experience and is among the leading wicket-takers in the Big Bash League.
Apart from him, the team has a strong pace unit featuring Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Marcus Stoinis, giving them enough depth in the bowling department.
Supports New Zealand’s T20 League Vision
Ferguson also voiced strong support for New Zealand’s proposed franchise-based T20 league, NZ20. He believes the country has immense cricketing talent and can successfully host a league that matches global standards.
According to him, such a tournament would not only showcase New Zealand’s scenic beauty but also provide young cricketers with a valuable platform to shine on the international stage.
Despite his absence being a challenge for Punjab Kings early on, Ferguson made it clear that, for now, family responsibilities take priority over cricket commitments.
