India vs Newzealand T20 Final World Cup: India are set to face New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2026 final on Sunday, March 8, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. While the team has had a strong campaign so far, the form of two players — Varun Chakaravarthy and Abhishek Sharma — has become a talking point before the big match.
Both players entered the tournament in excellent form and hold the No.1 position in the ICC T20 rankings in their respective roles. However, their performances during the World Cup have not matched expectations. Among the two, Abhishek Sharma’s struggles with the bat have drawn particular attention.
Sunil Gavaskar Calls for Team Changes
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has suggested that India should consider making bold changes to their playing XI for the final. According to him, the team management could look at strengthening the batting order and bringing in players who can make an immediate impact.
Gavaskar said he would like to see Ishan Kishan open the innings alongside Sanju Samson. He also recommended including Rinku Singh in the lineup, believing the left-handed batter can deliver in pressure situations.

Gavaskar pointed out that Rinku has a strong belief in himself and even mentioned the player’s well-known “God’s Plan” tattoo, saying that sometimes such confidence can help players produce special moments on the field.
Kuldeep Could Replace Varun
Gavaskar also suggested a change in the bowling department. He believes Kuldeep Yadav could be a better option in the final instead of Varun Chakaravarthy.
According to him, Varun’s confidence appears to have taken a hit after the Super Eight stage, especially when he faced stronger teams and conceded a significant number of runs. Gavaskar feels Kuldeep’s ability to generate turn, even on flatter pitches, could be useful at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where the large boundaries may also assist spinners.
Big Decisions Ahead for Team India
With the T20 World Cup title on the line, India’s team management now faces a crucial decision regarding the final playing XI. Whether they stick with the current combination or opt for the changes suggested by Gavaskar could play a significant role in determining the outcome of the final against New Zealand.
