Bihar, India : India witnessed a significant reshuffle in the appointments of Governors and Lieutenant Governors across several states and Union Territories. President Droupadi Murmu approved changes affecting nine regions on Thursday. Among the key decisions, retired Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed as the new Governor of Bihar. He will take over the position from Arif Mohammad Khan.
Early Life and Education
Syed Ata Hasnain spent his early academic years at Sherwood College in Nainital. Later, he pursued higher education at University of Delhi.
He also received advanced training abroad, studying at the Royal College of Defence Studies in London and at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in Honolulu. These institutions are known for preparing senior leaders in defence and strategic affairs.

Distinguished Military Career
After graduating from the Indian Military Academy, Hasnain was commissioned in 1974 into the 4th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles. During nearly four decades in the Indian Army, he held several important command positions, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir.
One of his most notable roles was commanding the 15 Corps, also known as the Chinar Corps, headquartered in Srinagar. This formation is responsible for overseeing military operations in the Kashmir Valley.
Later, he led the 21 Corps, one of the Army’s major strike formations. Before retiring in 2013, he also served at Army Headquarters as Military Secretary.
Military Honors and Awards
Throughout his distinguished service, Syed Ata Hasnain received several prestigious military decorations. These include the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), and the Sena Medal (SM).

Role After Retirement
After leaving the Army, Hasnain remained active in academic and strategic circles. In 2018, he was appointed Chancellor of the Central University of Kashmir, where he worked to strengthen higher education in the region.
He has also been widely involved in discussions on national security and geopolitical affairs as a commentator and strategic analyst.
Changes in Other States and Union Territories
The reshuffle also affected several other states and Union Territories.The Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Shiv Pratap Shukla, has now been assigned the responsibility of Telangana. Meanwhile, the outgoing Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has been appointed Governor of Maharashtra.
In the northeastern state of Nagaland, Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed as the new Governor.
Several changes were also made in Union Territories. The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Vinai Kumar Saxena, has been transferred to serve as Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. Former diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu will now take charge as Delhi’s new Lieutenant Governor.
Former Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta has been appointed Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
Further adjustments were made in southern and eastern states as well. The Governor of Tamil Nadu, R. N. Ravi, has been moved to West Bengal as the new Governor. Meanwhile, the Governor of Kerala, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, will now serve as the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
This large-scale reshuffle is being seen as an important administrative move affecting several key states and Union Territories across the country.
