Assam News : The Himanta Biswa Sarma has once again been chosen to lead Assam, as the Bharatiya Janata Party officially named him the leader of its legislative party. The announcement was made after the BJP legislators’ meeting, where J. P. Nadda confirmed Sarma’s name for the top post.
Sarma is scheduled to take the oath of office on May 12 at 11 AM, marking another term as the chief minister of Assam.
BJP Legislature Party Finalizes Leadership
To oversee the selection process, the BJP had appointed senior party leader J.P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini as observers for the legislature party meeting in Assam. During the meeting, party MLAs formally elected Himanta Biswa Sarma as their leader, clearing the way for the formation of the new government.
Served as Caretaker After Resignation
Himanta Biswa Sarma had resigned from the chief minister’s post on May 6 as part of the constitutional process before the formation of the new government. Since then, he had been handling responsibilities as caretaker chief minister.
With the latest decision, Sarma is now set to return as chief minister for a consecutive term.
Oath Ceremony Likely in Guwahati
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place at the Khanapara Veterinary College Field in Guwahati on May 12 at 11 AM.Several top leaders are expected to attend the event, including Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, along with senior BJP leadership. Chief ministers from nearly 22 states are also likely to be invited for the ceremony.
BJP’s Stronghold Continues in Assam
The BJP first came to power in Assam in 2016, when Sarbananda Sonowal became chief minister. In 2021, Himanta Biswa Sarma took over the leadership of the state.Now, after securing another major victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, the party has once again placed its trust in Sarma to lead Assam forward.
