Vijay Takes Oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, TVK Ends Decades of Dravidian Political Dominance

Tamilnadu : A major political shift unfolded in southern India on Sunday as C. Joseph Vijay, president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), officially took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

With Vijay’s swearing-in, the state witnessed the end of a political pattern that had continued for nearly six decades, where power largely alternated between Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

Historic Ceremony in Chennai

The oath-taking ceremony took place on Sunday morning at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai shortly after 10 AM.

Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Governor of Tamil Nadu, administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay in the presence of party leaders, supporters, and invited guests.

Alongside Vijay, nine other senior leaders from TVK also took oath as members of the new cabinet.

First Decisions Signed on Stage

Moments after assuming office, Vijay signed three key government orders directly on stage, signaling the priorities of his administration from day one.

  • The first decision announced free electricity of up to 200 units for every household across the state.
  • The second order focused on tackling the growing drug problem by setting up dedicated special forces in every district.
  • The third major announcement involved the formation of a special task force aimed at strengthening women’s safety and security across Tamil Nadu.

Majority Support Clears Path to Power

A day before the swearing-in ceremony, Vijay received formal backing from 120 elected members in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, securing the numbers required to form the government.

Following this support, he was officially invited to form the new government.

A New Political Chapter Begins

Vijay’s rise from cinema icon to Chief Minister marks one of the most dramatic political developments in Tamil Nadu’s recent history. With TVK now in power, the state enters a new political era, breaking away from the long-standing dominance of its traditional Dravidian parties.
